Ice Cup Canoe Race | Crossing the Saint Lawrence River in Quebec
Ice canoeing, a sport born from the necessity to cross the Saint Lawrence River in the winter months, officially turned competitive with its first race in 1894. Each February the Quebec Winter Carnival hosts the biggest competition of the year, le Grand Defi Des Glaces. Over 40 teams show up to make up three competitive classes, elite men, elite women, and sport. These athletes train all year to compete in the frigid waters of the Saint Lawrence, complete with crampons and custom (sometimes homemade) neoprene uniforms.
